placed 6- 99 by floater [sue clausen]
penwell, new jersey
5 mile circuit hike with steep climb
on rt. 57 between hackettstown and washington
turn onto penwell mills road,go over bridge and second driveway on
right-there is a small brown sign
park and obtain map
proceed along fields following orange markers
into the woods you will hear the Musconetcong river and possibly see
some fly fisherman
bear left at the fork, leaving the river, and at the intersection makea
left beginning the steep ascent.the sign shows hikers only
stop at the burl tree andrest-pay or collect tolls.
after some steep rock scrambling you will be paid off with a view- enjoy
a picnic lunch
when ready to continue on follow the orange markers aong a fallen tree
and follow the ridge until you come to a stone wall.
with your back to the tree with 4 orange markers go: 12 steps at 250
10 steps at 310
12 steps at 230
look closely and cleverly it is well hidden
continue along stone wall and orange markers, cross a little stream and
go down and back into fields and then parking lot
